CLINIC
The Department specializes in key areas of modern oncology, including general oncology and tumors of the skin, breast, thyroid gland, and maxillofacial region. The department provides the full range of surgical treatments currently established in modern oncology.
The department develops and implements advanced approaches to the diagnosis, combined-modality, and comprehensive treatment of patients with malignant tumors of various sites, contributing to improved short- and long-term treatment outcomes. Specialist consultations are also provided in all regions of the Republic of Armenia.
The department uses intraoperative fluorescence imaging, a modern technique that can help reduce the extent of surgery in selected procedures and minimize the risk of postoperative complications. For example, in breast cancer surgery, fluorescence imaging enables the identification of sentinel lymph nodes, allowing the surgical team to determine whether further lymph node dissection is necessary based on their assessment.
Head and Neck Oncology
Department specialists provide diagnostic, surgical, and non-surgical treatment in accordance with modern clinical standards for benign and malignant tumors of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) organs, as well as tumors of the face and neck and non-neoplastic lesions.
Diagnostic procedures include:
- Biopsy of tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses using endonasal or open approaches under local or general anesthesia
- Biopsy of pharyngeal lesions
- Biopsy of laryngeal tumors using endolaryngeal approaches under local anesthesia or open approaches under general anesthesia
- Biopsy of neck masses using fine-needle aspiration and/or open biopsy techniques
Surgical procedures include:
- Surgery for benign and malignant tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses
- Endonasal removal of lesions
- Moore and Denker rhinotomy
- Caldwell–Luc maxillary sinus surgery
- Frontal sinusotomy
- Removal of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas
- Tonsillectomy and open pharyngotomy with removal of pharyngeal tumors
- Surgical treatment of laryngeal tumors
- Endolaryngeal removal of vocal cord lesions without an external incision, under local or general anesthesia
- Thyrotomy with open surgical removal of vocal cord tumors
- Partial laryngectomy
- Total laryngectomy
- Surgery for midline and lateral neck cysts and metastatic cervical lymph node involvement, including radical and selective neck dissections
- Tracheal resection
- Surgery for tumors of the auricle, external auditory canal, and skin of the external nose
- Tracheostomy for airway obstruction associated with various laryngeal and thyroid conditions
Malignant tumors of the ENT region often require multimodal treatment, and the National Center of Oncology provides the full range of treatment options necessary for comprehensive care.
Reconstructive Surgery
The department also performs reconstructive surgery for various tumor-related conditions affecting the head and neck, breast, trunk, and extremities.
These procedures can significantly enhance the radicality of cancer surgery while restoring anatomical form and, in selected cases, functional capacity.
Reconstructive procedures are generally performed simultaneously with tumor resection. In selected cases, they may also be performed as secondary or delayed procedures following definitive oncologic surgery.
The department performs approximately 1,500 surgical procedures annually, a significant proportion of which are reconstructive procedures of varying complexity.
Department specialists regularly participate in advanced training programs at leading international medical centers, continuously expanding their expertise and acquiring knowledge of the latest surgical techniques and approaches.
