The Neuro-Oncology Department was established in October 1983 under the leadership of Georgi Karapeti Zhamkochyan, PhD, Associate Professor. At the time of its establishment, it was the first department of its kind throughout the Soviet Union.

Over the decades, approximately 10,000 surgical procedures have been performed in the Department for tumors of the central nervous system and other neurosurgical conditions.

The Department is equipped with advanced medical technologies, including:

• A next-generation LEICA surgical microscope
• SONOCA ultrasonic surgical equipment, enabling surgeons to operate on deep-seated intracerebral lesions

The Department has introduced and successfully applies a unique intraoperative local chemotherapy technique, which is not available elsewhere in Armenia.

The Department provides treatment for patients with benign and malignant tumors of the nervous system, including highly complex neurosurgical procedures. Treatment is frequently combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, depending on the patient's condition and treatment plan.

Research and Scientific Activities

The Department has made significant scientific and methodological contributions to the field of neuro-oncology.

The main areas of scientific interest of the Department's specialists include:

• Intraoperative local chemotherapy techniques
• Diagnosis of metastatic brain tumors and the application of modern surgical treatment methods
• Optimization of surgical techniques for tumors of the posterior cranial fossa
• Surgical treatment of pituitary adenomas
