CLINIC

The Department of Abdominal and Endoscopic Surgery is a multidisciplinary unit specializing in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract and retroperitoneal space. Surgical procedures are performed using open laparotomy, laparoscopic, and endoscopic techniques.

The Department is equipped with:

• A state-of-the-art Pentax endoscopic system, enabling both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the gastrointestinal tract
• EUS (endoscopic ultrasonography)
• An EBUS bronchoscopy system, which plays a key role in the accurate diagnosis and staging of lung tumors and enables detailed treatment planning
• SONACA equipment designed for liver resections
• A choledochoscope

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed using the endoscopic system include:

• Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
• Colonoscopy
• Urease testing for Helicobacter pylori
• Biopsy
• Endoscopic control of gastrointestinal bleeding
• Removal of foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract
• Balloon dilation and stenting of gastrointestinal strictures
• Gastric balloon placement
• Endoscopic removal of benign and malignant gastrointestinal neoplasms
• Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for examination and treatment of the bile ducts
• Endoscopic papillotomy / sphincterotomy for stone extraction from the bile ducts
• Biliary stenting
• Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)
• EUS (endoscopic ultrasonography)

The Department also performs:

• Esophageal resections
• Pancreaticoduodenal resections
• Ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage of the bile ducts
• Percutaneous biopsies of the pancreas, liver, retroperitoneal and intra-abdominal lymph nodes
• Microwave ablation of malignant tumors
• Laparoscopic hyperthermic intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC)

Surgical Procedures

The Department performs an average of 1,000 surgical procedures annually, including:

Stomach and duodenum

• Gastrectomy
• Distal and proximal gastrectomy with extensive lymph node dissection
• Pyloroplasty

Liver

• Liver resection, including procedures performed using SONACA technology
• Hemihepatectomy
• Atypical liver resections
• Removal of parasitic liver cysts
• External and internal biliary drainage

Pancreas and spleen

• Distal pancreatectomy
• Cyst removal and drainage
• Splenectomy

Colon and rectum

• Hemicolectomy
• Sigmoid colon resection
• Anterior rectal resection
• Abdominoperineal resection of the rectum
• Rectal extirpation, including laparoscopic procedures

Retroperitoneal space

• Resection of benign and malignant tumors of the retroperitoneal space
